it illustrates an place from "the dream quest of unknown kadath" an novella by h.p. lovecraft.
the city of the gugs is located in the underworld which is part of the dreamlands.

"City of the Gugs

The City of the Gugs is a colossal, horrifying cityscape of soaring, cyclopean towers. It is the dwelling place of the gugs, banished to the underworld by a covenant of the gods. Its most prominent landmark is the Tower of Koth, which contains a legendary stairway that leads to the surface.

Close by the city is the cemetery of the gugs, its graves marked by huge stone monoliths. Ghouls often dine here; a deceased gug feeds them for almost a year." (wikipedia)

this was a blast to paint. :)

Very cool- I like the atmosphere, it's perfectly gloomy. Are those nightgaunts in the far distance?

thank you so much !! glad you like it! and yeah - i was thinking in nightgaunts- i should detail them a bit better i think.this was kind of a "speed-painting" , until sunrise...
illustrating this stories is so awesome- i think i´ll do some more images for the dreamquest. :)
