it illustrates an place from "the dream quest of unknown kadath" an novella by h.p. lovecraft.
the city of the gugs is located in the underworld which is part of the dreamlands.

"City of the Gugs

The City of the Gugs is a colossal, horrifying cityscape of soaring, cyclopean towers. It is the dwelling place of the gugs, banished to the underworld by a covenant of the gods. Its most prominent landmark is the Tower of Koth, which contains a legendary stairway that leads to the surface.

Close by the city is the cemetery of the gugs, its graves marked by huge stone monoliths. Ghouls often dine here; a deceased gug feeds them for almost a year." (wikipedia)

this was a blast to paint. :)

Almost looks like some kind of demented ant hive. :) I think you did a very credible version of the City of Gugs - creepy, spooky, and very disturbing.

oh thanks ! this was kind of an speed-painting, not really alla prima- because i had some preperation sketches, but i painted this quite fast. initially i wanted to do an more "realistic" looking illustration- more three dimensional- but i kind of like the "flat" story-book aspect to which it evolved.i think i used this kind of "pseudo-perspectives" alot more in my old illustrations.it probably fits well here since it depicts an dream,where dimensions are distorted... :)

Yes! That would be very cool!! I don't know too much of his writing tho. I was listing to The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath for the 1st time while I was drawing mine for the monthly topic. It was fun tho because it felt like used my imagination alot more :D Another team work would be awesome too! You have a topic in mind?
